Football Reunion

Jacque and I attended a high school football game, this one pitting my alma mater, Kamehameha, against Kahuku.  At stake:  the state championship.

Row 1:  Ken Williams, Chris Thomas, Dayle
Row 2: Casey Kunitomo, Tim Lino
Row 3: Harding Parilla, Blaise Bissen, Steve Robello

Happily, Kamehameha won 34-21.

The game was an opportunity for a reunion with some of the guys I played football with in high school.

For time and all eternity

We were sealed for time and eternity in the Kona Hawaii Temple.  What this means is that our marriage is not "till death do we part."  Instead, we are married forever, a very long time. We had hoped to be sealed in Laie Temple so that more family and friends could attend but Laie Temple was being renovated at the time, so on to Kona it was.

Attending the sealing in the temple were Joe and JaniceAhuna (to the left below) and Milley, Tim and Hinano Lino (Hinano is Tim and Milley's oldest son and a returned missionary [Arizona]). The Ahunas are members of our home ward in Kaneohe.  Tim is a schoolmate of Dayle's (Kamehameha Kapalama).  At Tim and Milley's wedding/sealing back in 1981 at the Laie Temple, Dayle was Tim's best man, but he could not participate because he was not a member of the Church.  Well, today he got to participate.  :-)

A new addition to the ohana

In the early evening, Jacque went out to who knows where.  About an hour after leaving, she was back home again, but she was not alone.

With her was a puppy (7 weeks old):  a female Rottweiler.

I was sitting in the living room reading at the time.  When I saw the tiny dog, to say that I was unhappy was understating how I felt.

Jacque said nothing, probably in anticipation of words of displeasure or rebuke or something from me.

But, just like her, I said nothing, even when Jacque laid the puppy on the living room floor in front of me and it came squirming and stumbling to my feet, with those classic, helpless, hopeful puppy dog eyes.

Jacque later told me that God told her that this dog was destined to be part of our family.  Well, I had other thoughts about that on this night, but what I have come to know is that what she said is true.

She was destined to be part of our family.  We named her Roxy Sasha Turner.

My dad's funeral

The funeral for my father, Charles Turner, was today.

The thing about funerals is that people have opportunities to see other people who they may not have seen for quite some time.  Funerals have a way of bringing people together.

I learned a lot today.  Part of the services today included a slide show with lots of pictures of my dad and his family and friends throughout his life.  I learned a lot about his other family.  In fact, if an observer were take a reckoning of my dad's life on the slide show, that observer might conclude that his other family was a more significant part of Charles Turner than the family I knew of, which included my mom and my brothers and sisters.

I wish I had taken it upon myself to know my dad better in this life, but I trust that I will.

Farewell for now, Dad.

My father, Charles Arthur Turner, passed away today.  He was living in Kea'au on the Big Island with his wife Gen.  He was 74.

His obituary, from the Honolulu Advertiser, reads as follows:

U.S. Army military police officer; retired Honolulu Police Department sergeant; U.S. Marshall Service court security officer; Department of Defense Naval Magazine Lualualei captain of operations. Survived by wife, Genevieve Farias-Turner; sons, Kale, Dayle and Arthur Alika; daughters, Mona Lisa Fernandez and Paula Blackshire; hanai sons, Gilbert Skip and Douglas Farias and Gary Phillips; hanai daughter, Candace Farias; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. In the weeks leading up to this day, I knew my dad's health had declined.  In my last conversation with him by phone, I told him that I would see him again.  "All will be well, Dad," I told him.

Valentine's Day 2009 -- Jacque works her magic

Valentine’s day 2009: made a homemade card for Jacque with the theme “how do I love thee. Let me count the ways.” She enjoyed it!

Also made French toast (heart-shaped with red food coloring but when cooked it looked more brown than red/pink.

Jacque took CNA test at Red Cross Diamond Head (passed!). She is scheduled to return to work tomorrow after nearly a year of being out from work due to surgeries and illness.

We ate V-day dinner at Red Lobster in Waikiki. Long lines which snaked around the block! But while I parked the car, Jacque worked her magic (those who know her know what I mean) and got us seats at the bar which led to very quick service and no long wait in line! We were in and out in less than an hour during which we had a great meal which included an appetizer and dessert; meanwhile folks were waiting two hours just to get in.

Happy Valentine's Day, sweetheart!
